What Happened to Rem in Re Zero

Rem is one of the few characters in Re: Zero who stayed in fans’ hearts even after the episodes ended. People loved her because she was kind, loyal, and strong, and she supported Subaru when he needed it most. Season 2 of Re: Zero ended in March 2021 with 25 episodes. While it focused more on Emilia and the Sanctuary arc. But at the end of Season 1, everyone forgot about Rem, and she went into a coma.

Hence the question: What happened to Rem in Re: Zero? Suddenly, the characters forgot her, and even her name vanished. If you missed her presence in Season 2 and 3 and want to know what really happened to her, you should read this post till the end.

Who is Rem in Brief?

Rem is the younger twin sister of Ram. Both of them belong to the Oni (demon) race. Oni are born with one horn that gives them great power. But Rem and Ram were born as twins, which was seen as a bad sign in their village. Each of them had only one horn, not two.

Ram was gifted from birth. She became the pride of the village. However, Rem always felt less than her, like she was living in her sister’s shadow.

Then came a tragedy. The Witch’s Cult attacked their village. Many Oni were killed, including their parents. Ram lost her horn during this fight, and that moment changed both sisters forever. Rem felt guilty, and she thought Ram got hurt because she was weak.

After that, Roswaal L. Mathers took them in. Rem and Ram worked as maids in his mansion. During this time, Rem trained hard. She became strong with her flail weapon and learned water and healing magic.

What Happened to Rem in Re: Zero

Rem’s story takes a painful turn at the end of Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2. During a battle with the Sin Archbishops, Rem was attacked by Lye Batenkaitos, the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. He devoured her name and memories. This is not just some magical injury. It erased her from the minds of everyone except Subaru.

Rem’s body stayed alive, but she fell into a deep sleep. It was like she existed but did not exist. She became forgotten by the world. Subaru tried everything. But his power “Return by Death” could not undo it. His save point was already set after the attack. So no matter how many times he died, he could not go back to stop it. For all of Season 2 and 3, Rem stays unconscious. She does not speak, move, or interact with anyone.

Fate of Rem at the End of the Series (Spoiler!!)

When Season 3 ends, Rem is still in a coma. Nothing changes in the anime. She does not wake up. No one remembers her. Subaru still carries her body with him, hoping for a way to bring her back.

But in the light novel, her story goes a bit further. After Lye Batenkaitos is killed in Arc 6, Rem finally wakes up. However, she does not get her memories back right away. She suffers from amnesia and does not remember Subaru or her past life.

Even though she is awake, she is not the same. Her journey is not over yet. The author, Tappei Nagatsuki, confirmed that Re: Zero will end on a happy note.

Happy Rem

Rem’s Relationship with Subaru So Far

In the beginning, Rem hated Subaru. She sensed the “Witch’s Scent” on him and thought he was a threat. She even killed him in some timelines during the loops. But Subaru never gave up. He kept saving others, kept protecting people.

After he rescued her from the mabeasts, Rem’s heart changed. She saw him as her hero. With the progress of the series, she fell in love with him. And when Subaru was at his lowest and was about to give up, she gave him her support. That campfire scene where she confessed her love and said she would be his second wife?

But Subaru chose Emilia. He cared deeply for Rem but could not return her love. Still, Rem stayed loyal and strong.

In the End

Rem started as a quiet side character. But with her character development in just one season, she became one of the most beloved characters in Re: Zero. She went from living in her sister’s shadow to being the heart of the show.

Now you know what happened to Rem. And her story is far from over. Drop a comment below about your opinion on this matter, and you can also subscribe to be updated on anime facts and news.
