Denji Eats Makima in Chainsaw Man: What Really Happened in the Manga

Denji Eats Makima in Chainsaw Man What Really Happened in the Manga

Makima’s control over Denji shaped almost every major event in Chainsaw Man Part 1. She used contracts, manipulation, and psychological pressure to break him again and again. So when we reach the end of Part 1, one incident shocked many fans. Denji eats Makima in a chapter, and the scene is going viral. And everyone is confused and has many questions and concerns.

By the final part of Part 1, the manga stops hiding anything. It was not even quick with a few panels. It is shown that Denji is preparing Makima’s flesh and making many dishes with it. Let us break it down clearly.

Did Denji Really Eat Makima?

Yes. Denji eats Makima in the manga.

In Chapter 96 of Chainsaw Man Part 1, titled “This Kind of Taste” (Konna Aji), Denji eats Makima. Which was previously prepared and cooked by him. He says “Itadakimasu” and starts eating. The panels focus on miso soup, ginger-fried meat with onions, and rice. He even comments on the taste.

Denji is referring to Makima’s body as food that he prepared. He recognises the taste and understands exactly what he is consuming. The scene is placed near the end of Part 1 in official Shonen Jump and VIZ listings, confirming that this moment is literal and not a fan rumour.

How Denji Outsmarted Makima and Killed Her

How Denji Outsmarted Makima and Killed Her

Denji does not defeat Makima through a fair fight. He had to fake his death, then kill her while she was distracted. As we know, Makima have died multiple times and come back to life. Let’s go through the specifics of how this time she died for real.

The Fake Chainsaw Man

In Chapter 95, Makima connects herself to around two dozen Public Safety members with chains and confronts Denji. She overwhelms him in close combat and tears Pochita out of his chest after ripping him apart. She thought she had Chainsaw Man.

In Chapter 96, the twist lands. The real Denji stands up from a pile of corpses wearing an oversized Public Safety uniform as a disguise. He approaches Makima from behind, slices her before she can react, and immediately retrieves Pochita. But still, Makima was sure she could live with this much damage to her body.

Makima’s Blind Spot

Denji killed Makima

In Chapter 97, Denji explains, Makima does not rely on normal visual recognition. She mainly perceives people through smell. Denji realised she had been focusing on Chainsaw Man’s scent and never truly noticed Denji as his own individual presence. That blind spot allowed him to get close without being recognised as a threat. (And bro thought she loves her😭)

Power’s Blood and the Final Strike

As a Control Devil, one chainsaw attack is not that special. She could easily recover from that. But here is another twist. Denji uses a chainsaw formed from Power’s blood. Earlier, Power gave him her blood through a contract. Denji saved that blood for this exact moment and states he used up all of it during the final setup.

To finish the job, Denji is shown cooking and preparing her body as food. Denji explains later that he ate all of Makima. This was not random brutality. He understood that her contract transfers attacks made against her to random Japanese citizens. So he reframed his action. He did not consider it an attack. He viewed it as becoming one with her.

By cooking and consuming her piece by piece, Denji avoided triggering the contract’s “attack” condition. That is why she does not regenerate. The act is disturbing, but within the rules established by the manga, its only way.

What Chapter Does Denji Eat Makima in the Manga?

Denji Eats Makima

Denji eats Makima in Manga Chapter 96, “This Kind of Taste.”

This chapter is positioned between Chapter 95 (“Chainsaw Man vs. Control Devil”) and Chapter 97 (“I, Love, Chainsaw”) in official listings. In collected volumes, it appears in Volume 11: Go Get ’Em, Chainsaw Man.

In anime, this scene has not been adopted yet.

Is Makima Really Dead After That?

Is Makima Really Dead

Yes. Makima died at the hands of Denji(not control devil). But the Control Devil is still alive. We saw the reincarnated Control Devil in the manga as a little girl named Nayuta.

In Chapter 96, Makima is explicitly marked as (Death). Chapter 97 strengthens the confirmation. Denji tells Kishibe that he ate all of Makima and that she did not revive, “not in his stomach nor the toilet.”

In Chapter 84, Makima explains she has a deal with the Prime Minister of Japan that transfers attacks made against her onto a random Japanese citizen. Normal kill attempts fail because of this condition.

In Chapter 97, Kishibe says Denji “accidentally found a way around her contract.” Denji explains that he did not act out of hatred. He viewed eating Makima and becoming one with her as love, not an attack, which bypassed the contract’s condition.

The manga then confirms that while Makima is gone, the Control Devil reincarnates. Kishibe reveals that the reborn Control Devil was found in China and brought to Japan.

Will the Anime Adapt the “Denji Eats Makima” Scene?

If the anime adapts Part 1 completely, the “Denji eats Makima” scene cannot be removed without cutting the actual ending. The question is how it will be shown on screen.

Broadcast Limits and Framing

Television anime frequently adjusts explicit material for broadcast. Series like Tokyo Ghoul used heavy shadows and visual blocking during cannibalistic scenes while keeping the events intact. Attack on Titan showed humans being eaten, but framed some shots to reduce visible gore compared to the manga.

What That Means for Chainsaw Man

The Denji and Makima scene carries body horror and psychological weight. The anime can present the cooking setup, Denji’s calm dialogue, and the implication without focusing on graphic detail.

Chainsaw Man already has a reputation for keeping its violence intense, but broadcast standards still apply. A framed or softened presentation can be acceptable. But they should not go too far.

Final thoughts

Makima’s death is not surprising by the end of Part 1. We saw how far her manipulation went. She controlled Denji, destroyed Aki, and killed Power in front of him. She treated people as tools.

A character who commits that level of harm rarely walks away in a story built on consequences. When Denji ended her, it felt like relief. Makima does not survive her actions, which should have happened. The Control Devil returns in a new form, but Makima herself is gone.
